We recently interviewed the developers behind the upcoming Okami sequel in Osaka, Japan. Our two-hour conversation included Clover's director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata. We discussed their vision for the sequel, its origins, and what fans can expect.

The full interview is available here, but for those seeking highlights, here's a summary of key takeaways for Okami fans:

Developed in RE Engine

The biggest revelation: the sequel utilizes Capcom's RE Engine. This allows the team to realize aspects of their original vision for Okami that were previously technologically impossible. While many at Clover lack RE Engine experience, Capcom partner Machine Head Works bridges this gap.

Ex-Platinum Developers Involved

Rumors of talent migrating from PlatinumGames, including those who worked on the original Okami, have circulated. While specifics remain undisclosed, Kamiya hinted at ex-Platinum and ex-Capcom developers contributing to the sequel via Machine Head Works.

A Long-Awaited Sequel

Capcom's interest in an Okami sequel predates this announcement. While initial sales were modest, sustained growth across platforms prompted reconsideration. As Hirabayashi explained, the project required key personnel, and aligning schedules took time.

A Direct Sequel

This is a true sequel, directly continuing the story from the first game. We won't spoil anything for those unfamiliar with the original, but suffice it to say, there's ample room for narrative expansion.

Amaterasu's Return

Yes, that's Amaterasu in the trailer.

Acknowledging Okamiden

The Nintendo DS title, Okamiden, exists and has its fanbase. However, Capcom acknowledges that it didn't fully meet all expectations. Hirabayashi stated, "We know that there are fans out there that like the game, of course. And we also know the feedback on the game out there, of how the story was taken and now how perhaps parts of the story weren’t aligning with what people were expecting. With that, we also have the sequel now that, as we explained before, is a continuation from the story of the original base Ōkami. That's how we're going to phrase it."

Kamiya Monitors Fan Feedback

Hideki Kamiya actively engages with social media, acknowledging fan expectations while emphasizing his commitment to creating the best possible game, not simply fulfilling requests.

Kondoh's Musical Contribution

Rei Kondoh, composer for the original Okami and numerous other titles, composed the Game Awards trailer's Rising Sun arrangement, suggesting his involvement in the sequel's soundtrack.

Early Stages of Development

The team announced the sequel early but requests patience. Hirabayashi stressed prioritizing quality over speed. Sakata added that significant time may pass before further updates. The team is dedicated to creating a game that meets fan expectations.
