FromSoftware Evokes Fresh Approach with Elden Ring

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages, compromising the intended gameplay experience.

The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has fostered significant player engagement. However, Nightreign's anticipated shorter play sessions (around 40 minutes each) necessitate a more streamlined approach. The absence of messaging aims to maintain a consistently intense and well-paced experience.

Despite this omission, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous elements. The bloodstain mechanic returns, offering players even more information about past player deaths and the chance to loot their spectral remains.

FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing intensity and multiplayer interaction over extended playtime. This focus is reflected in the game's planned three-day structure, minimizing downtime and maximizing variety. The game's 2025 release window (as revealed at TGA 2024) remains subject to further confirmation.
