The unexpected announcement of a Wheel of Time video game in development has left fans both intrigued and wary—with online discussions reflecting healthy skepticism.

First reported by industry publication Variety, details emerged about an upcoming "AAA open-world RPG" for PC and consoles, adapting Robert Jordan's beloved 14-book fantasy saga. The project reportedly has a three-year development window.

The game is being developed by newly established iwot Studios in Montreal, led by Craig Alexander—former Warner Bros. Games executive who previously managed Turbine's MMOs including Lord of the Rings Online. On paper, these credentials would typically generate enthusiasm. However, skepticism stems from iwot Studios' acquisition history (formerly as Red Eagle Entertainment) and questions surrounding the ambitious three-year timeline for a AAA RPG.

Online discussions reveal strained trust between iwot Studios and the Wheel of Time fandom. Longtime fans express concerns about perceived "IP squatting," citing multiple abandoned projects over nearly two decades. Some point to a decade-old Reddit thread cataloging past disappointments.

This history—combined with doubts about an unproven studio delivering a faithful AAA adaptation—has created widespread "wait-and-see" skepticism in the fan community.

This announcement comes during renewed interest in the franchise, following the success of Amazon Prime's TV adaptation. After mixed reception to early seasons' deviations from source material, Season 3 won back many fans with improved storytelling—introducing the saga to new audiences.

To better understand the project's realities, we spoke directly with iwot Studios leadership—CEO Rick Selvage and studio head Craig Alexander—about development status, creative vision, and their response to fan concerns.
