Starbreeze Entertainment announces an offline mode for Payday 3, launching later this month. However, this new mode requires an internet connection – a significant caveat given the previous backlash over the game's initial lack of offline play.
The Payday series, known for its cooperative heist gameplay and blend of stealth and action, debuted in 2011 with Payday: The Heist. Payday 3 enhanced stealth mechanics, offering players more strategic freedom. The upcoming "Boys in Blue" update (June 27th) introduces a new heist and the much-requested offline mode.
This new offline mode, initially launching in beta, will eventually allow completely offline solo play. For now, however, an internet connection is needed to access it, although players will bypass the matchmaking system. This addresses a key complaint about Payday 3's launch, which also lacked other classic features like The Safehouse.
Payday 3's Offline Mode: A Work in Progress
Starbreeze confirms ongoing improvements to the solo mode, aiming for a satisfying solo experience. Almir Listo, Head of Community and Global Brand Director, states that further enhancements are planned post-launch. The June 27th update also includes a new heist, free items, and various improvements, including a new LMG, three masks, and customizable loadout naming.
Payday 3's launch faced challenges, including server issues and criticism for its limited initial content (eight heists). While future updates will add more heists, these will be paid expansions, such as the $10 Syntax Error heist. Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren previously apologized for the game's initial state.
