David Leitch, the acclaimed director behind films such as Atomic Blonde (2017), Deadpool 2 (2018), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), and Bullet Train (2022), is reportedly in negotiations to helm Netflix’s adaptation of the iconic video game, Gears of War. This move comes over two-and-a-half years after Netflix secured the rights to the Microsoft-owned franchise, signaling that progress is finally underway.
Leitch, along with his producing partner Kelly McCormick, will collaborate with Gears developer The Coalition on this project. The script is being penned by Jon Spaihts, known for his work on Dune. In addition to the movie, an adult animation series is also in development, set to expand the universe post-movie release. If successful, this could lead to further adaptations within the Gears of War franchise.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the upcoming film is the casting of Marcus Fenix, the series' protagonist. Dave Bautista, a former wrestler turned actor, has publicly expressed his strong desire to take on this role. He has even received the endorsement of Gears co-creator Cliff Bleszinski, adding weight to his candidacy.
The timing couldn't be better for video game adaptations, with recent successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, A Minecraft Movie, and the Sonic franchise setting new benchmarks. Other notable adaptations include Uncharted, Mortal Kombat, and multiple Resident Evil films, showcasing the growing popularity and potential of this genre.

Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from each project and gaining confidence in the process. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," he stated, hinting at more adaptations to come.
In the gaming realm, The Coalition is currently developing Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel to the series, though it does not yet have a release date. This ongoing development further underscores Microsoft's commitment to expanding the Gears of War universe across various media platforms.
