Hideo Kojima has already conceptualized Death Stranding 3, though he confirms he won't be the one developing it. Learn more about how Death Stranding 2 could spawn multiple sequels and what's next for the visionary game director.

During a May 8 interview with VGC, Death Stranding 2 director Hideo Kojima revealed he already has a concept for a potential third game, though he won't personally helm its development. He explained that a key feature in DS2 - the revolutionary "Plate Gates" system - could enable the franchise to expand globally through multiple sequels.
"With this Plate Gate mechanism, the series could theoretically produce endless sequels," Kojima stated. However, he quickly clarified: "I have no intention of making them myself, though I've already conceptualized a third installment. If another developer took over, they could certainly execute it." While this means fans shouldn't expect another Kojima-directed sequel, the franchise may continue under new leadership with the creator's endorsement.

The original Death Stranding launched in November 2019, coinciding with a world on the brink of pandemic lockdowns. Kojima described how this global event transformed DS2's thematic direction: "The first game was about connection - warning against isolation as nations divided. When COVID-19 hit, we saw how the Internet (our real-world Chiral Network) both saved and divided us."

This paradox inspired DS2's evolving narrative. "The pandemic made me reconsider connection itself," Kojima explained. The sequel's logo strands symbolize this thematic shift: while DS1 advocated "Let's Connect," DS2 questions whether "We should not have connected." Kojima hints this existential dilemma will permeate the sequel's story and mechanics.

Though stepping back from future Death Stranding installments, Kojima isn't slowing down. His collaboration with Jordan Peele on OD (formerly Overdose) promises to push creative boundaries. "This Microsoft project required infrastructure no company thought possible five years ago - they thought I was crazy," he revealed with characteristic humor.

Simultaneously, PlayStation will publish his mysterious "next-generation action espionage" title. Described as the culmination of his 40-year career, this original IP will enter development after DS2's completion. "This will represent everything I've learned," Kojima vowed during January 2024's State of Play.

While these ambitious projects progress, fans can anticipate DS2: On The Beach launching June 26, 2025 on PS5. The developer recently addressed the game's release timing amid industry-wide shifts following GTA 6's delay announcement. Stay updated with our dedicated Death Stranding 2 coverage below.
