Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 co-director Naoki Hamaguchi has reassured fans that the development team is carefully "striking a balance" in the highly anticipated final chapter—ensuring the story progresses smoothly while improving the overall pacing.
In a discussion with ScreenRant, the director addressed feedback about the series' pacing and lengthy segments. When asked whether he agreed that "certain sections" in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth felt overly long, Hamaguchi disagreed, stating, "Regarding the duration of specific parts in Rebirth, I genuinely don't feel they were unnecessarily extended. I think today's players simply have so many games and activities competing for their attention that they often feel an impulse to rush through content."
Nonetheless, Hamaguchi acknowledged the feedback, adding, "While crafting the finale of the trilogy, we are carefully managing how story arcs are presented and distributed to deliver a more streamlined experience."
During the same interview, Hamaguchi—who was inspired to enter game development after playing 1994's Final Fantasy VI—cited other sources of inspiration such as The Witcher series and Fable. He's currently engrossed in Ghost of Yotei, admitting, "I can't wait to get home and dive back in."
RPG enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting updates on the next entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched in early 2024. Development is known to have begun as early as June 2022, and last year Square Enix confirmed its target launch window is by 2027. Hype for the trilogy's conclusion soared when the team announced earlier this year that the story had been finalized.
Hamaguchi also recently confirmed that, despite Square Enix's previous statement that Rebirth "did not meet expectations," the second instalment has been "performing very well" on both PC and PS5. This success is helping fuel development of a "high-quality third entry." Co-director Tetsuya Nomura also acknowledged the demand for news on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4 last month, noting happily that development is “advancing very smoothly.”
