Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) has experienced a phenomenal launch, achieving significant sales and earning widespread critical acclaim across all platforms. Warhorse Studios proudly announced on Twitter (X) that the game surpassed 1 million copies sold on February 4th, 2025—a remarkable feat that significantly outpaces its predecessor, which took over nine days to reach the same milestone.
According to SteamDB, KCD2 peaked at 176,285 concurrent players within the six hours prior to this writing, eclipsing KCD1's all-time peak of 96,069 players. At the time of writing, KCD2 holds the 12th position among all PlayStation games in the U.S. as featured on the PS Store homepage.
The game also boasts an impressive "Mighty" rating from OpenCritic, scoring 89 with a 97% critic recommendation rate.
Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception from fans and critics, KCD2 has not been without its detractors. Creative Director Daniel Vávra responded to some negative reviews on Twitter (X), acknowledging the lower scores from certain outlets.
Some gaming review sites gave KCD2 considerably lower scores than its average rating across other platforms, often describing gameplay as a "slog" or requiring more effort than expected. This resulted in a slight dip in OpenCritic's aggregate score, a point Vávra addressed and responded to in several tweets, sarcastically commenting on what he perceived as questionable journalistic standards.
Vávra further engaged with online criticism targeting KCD2's inclusion of same-sex romance options. He addressed several Metacritic user reviews labeling the game as a "historically inaccurate DEI game" on Twitter (X), encouraging fans to review the game and report any bot-generated negative comments.
He reiterated that the LGBTQ+ content is entirely optional, emphasizing player agency and choice within the open-world medieval setting. The game offers players extensive freedom in how they experience this RPG.
