Composer Jack Wall, renowned for crafting the iconic 80s sci-fi inspired soundtracks for the first two entries in the Mass Effect series, recently shed light on why he did not return for the third installment, Mass Effect 3. Wall's contributions to the franchise, particularly the soundtrack for Mass Effect 2, released in 2010, have been celebrated by fans and critics alike. The sequel, often hailed as one of the greatest action role-playing games, featured the unforgettable 'Suicide Mission' track, which many consider a pinnacle of the series' music.
The absence of Wall in Mass Effect 3, which came out in 2012, came as a surprise and disappointment to many fans. In a revealing interview with The Guardian, Wall attributed his departure to a strained relationship with Casey Hudson, who was leading the Mass Effect development at the time. Wall admitted, "Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end," but expressed pride in his work, noting its Bafta nomination and overall success, despite not meeting Hudson's expectations.
The Guardian hinted at a "creative tension" between Wall and Hudson, though Wall remained somewhat elusive on the specifics. He acknowledged that such fallouts are part of the industry, stating, "Fallouts like that happen, it's just part of the deal. It's one of the few times in my career that's happened, and it was a tough time, but it is what it is."
Wall also shared the intense challenges he faced while working on Mass Effect 2, particularly with the 'Suicide Mission' track. He described the process as "the biggest mind-f\*\*\*ing thing I've ever done in my entire life," emphasizing the lack of guidance due to the development team's frantic efforts to complete the game. Despite these challenges, Wall's final submission required significant adjustments from the BioWare team to fit into the game, but the end result was lauded as one of the best ending sequences in gaming history.
Following his work on Mass Effect 2, Wall shifted his focus to composing for the Call of Duty series, with his most recent project being the soundtrack for Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is currently developing the next Mass Effect game after the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though they have yet to announce who will be taking on the role of composer for this new installment.
