Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, has temporarily suspended development on its debut title. Jar of Sparks, operating under NetEase, was aiming to create a "next-generation narrative-driven action game," but is now actively seeking a new publishing partner.
NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch included the recent reveal of Season 1 Battle Pass skins and upcoming Fantastic Four content slated for January 10th.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, stating the studio is searching for a partner to help realize their creative vision. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and bold risks, but also acknowledged the team will be exploring new opportunities. A subsequent post clarified that the studio will assist team members in finding new roles in the coming weeks as the first project concludes.
This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a veteran developer; Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a former Resident Evil producer, established GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase in 2022.
The Halo franchise, Hook's previous employer, has experienced challenges recently with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. Meanwhile, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine for future titles may signal a turning point for the franchise.
While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain, the gaming industry watches closely as this promising studio navigates this transition.
