The director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth discussed the PC version, focusing on modding possibilities and potential DLC plans. Learn more about what’s in store for the game’s PC release.
In an interview published on the Epic Games blog on December 13, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, revealed that the team considered adding a new DLC for the PC version but prioritized completing the trilogy’s final chapter instead.
The PC version could have featured fresh content, as Hamaguchi noted, “We initially wanted to include an episodic storyline as a DLC for the PC release.” However, due to limited resources, the team’s primary focus remains on finalizing the last installment.
While no new content is currently planned, Hamaguchi remains open to fan input. “If players strongly advocate for specific additions post-launch, we’re willing to explore those requests,” he said, suggesting that significant player demand could lead to new content for the PC version.
During the same interview, Hamaguchi addressed the modding community. Although the game lacks official mod support, its PC release is expected to draw modders who can enhance or alter game assets.
When asked about mod-friendliness compared to the 2012 remaster, Hamaguchi responded, “We value the modding community’s creativity and encourage their contributions, but we urge modders to avoid creating or using offensive or inappropriate content.”
Mods can enhance gameplay by introducing new features, improved textures, or additional content, with some, like Counter-Strike, evolving into standalone titles. However, Hamaguchi’s request reflects concerns about inappropriate mods, given the internet’s potential for controversial content.
The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth introduces upgraded graphics and features, including improved lighting and texture resolutions, enhancing the player experience. It launches on January 23, 2025, via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Adjustments to lighting rendering address a key issue from the original, which sometimes produced an unnatural effect on character faces. For high-end PCs, the team has also included enhanced 3D models and textures beyond the PS5’s capabilities.
Hamaguchi highlighted challenges in porting mini-games to PC, stating, Adapting numerous tasks, like customizing key configurations for specific mini-games, proved complex.
These efforts ensure a polished experience.
