Valve's Source SDK Receives Massive Update: Team Fortress 2's Code Now Open!

In a surprising move, Valve has unleashed a significant update to the Source SDK, granting full access to Team Fortress 2's client and server game code. This unprecedented release empowers modders to create entirely new games based on TF2's foundation. Unlike previous methods such as Steam Workshop, this update allows for extensive modification, expansion, and even complete rewrites of the game's core mechanics.

While commercialization is prohibited – meaning all derived content must be non-commercial and freely available – creations can be published on the Steam Store, listed as independent games.

Valve's decision acknowledges the substantial community investment in TF2, citing the vast amount of player-created content within the Steam Workshop. The company explicitly requests that modders respect this existing work and refrain from creating mods designed to profit from community contributions. Ideally, Valve hopes mods will maintain compatibility with players' existing TF2 inventories.

Valve is also implementing a major update across its back-catalog of multiplayer Source engine titles, introducing 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other enhancements.
