Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest has received an extension due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Initially slated to conclude on January 6th, Game Director Aaron Keller announced the mode's continued availability until mid-season. Following this, it will transition to an open queue format, allowing 1-3 heroes per class per team. The possibility of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture remains strong.
The 6v6 mode's initial run during last year's Overwatch Classic event showcased its immense appeal. Despite a short initial run, it quickly became a top-played mode. Its return in Season 14, initially planned for December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its popularity. This second playtest, lacking the retro hero abilities of the Classic event, still resonated strongly with players.
The ongoing positive reception prompted the extension. While the precise end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode's move to the Arcade section is imminent. Until mid-season, it will retain its current format. Afterward, the shift to open queue will introduce a new dynamic, requiring teams to field 1 to 3 heroes of each class.
The sustained success of 6v6 is unsurprising, given its consistent ranking as a top player request since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch. The shift to 5v5 gameplay in the sequel significantly altered the game, creating a polarizing effect among players.
However, the extended playtest fuels hope for 6v6's permanent integration. Many players anticipate its inclusion in the competitive playlist, a possibility that may materialize after the conclusion of the playtests.
