Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, has publicly expressed his strong desire to develop a game based on Microsoft's Shadowrun IP. This follows a request for a list of available Microsoft properties after the company's acquisition of Obsidian. While Obsidian is currently working on titles like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, Urquhart specifically highlighted Shadowrun as his top choice for a future project.
This interest isn't surprising, given Obsidian's history of successfully developing sequels and expansions within established RPG universes (Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, etc.). While they've proven capable of creating original IPs (The Outer Worlds, Alpha Protocol), their expertise in expanding existing worlds is undeniable. Urquhart himself has been a long-time fan of the Shadowrun tabletop RPG, owning multiple editions of the core rulebook.
The Shadowrun franchise, originating as a tabletop RPG in 1989, has seen numerous video game adaptations. While Microsoft acquired the video game rights in 1999, the last major standalone entry, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, was released in 2015. While remastered versions appeared in 2022, the demand for a new, original Shadowrun game remains high among fans. The potential collaboration between Obsidian and Microsoft could finally deliver the fresh Shadowrun experience many players crave.
