The developers at MercurySteam, alumni of Rebel Act Studios, bring with them the legacy of the cult classic game Severance: Blade of Darkness. Released back in 2001, this title was renowned for its innovative combat system that enabled players to sever enemies' limbs, infusing the gameplay with a sense of brutality and realism. Severance has been a significant source of inspiration for MercurySteam's new project, Blades of Fire.
In crafting Blades of Fire, the team also took cues from contemporary action-adventure games. Notably, they were inspired by the cinematic combat and intricately designed world of the God of War reboot by Santa Monica Studio. Their goal was to blend fast-paced action with RPG elements, aiming to deliver a deeply engaging and immersive gaming experience.
A standout feature of Blades of Fire is its unique weapon crafting system. Players will have the opportunity to forge their own blades, customizing aspects such as length, weight, durability, and balance. This system empowers players to tailor their weapons to suit their individual combat styles, enhancing the personal touch to the gameplay.
The narrative of Blades of Fire centers on the warrior Aran de Lira, who embarks on a perilous journey against a cunning queen with the power to turn metal into stone. Throughout his quest, Aran will encounter 50 different types of enemies, each demanding a distinct strategy to overcome.
Blades of Fire is set to launch on PC (via the Epic Games Store), Xbox Series, and PS5 on May 22, 2025. This eagerly anticipated release promises to blend the best of classic and modern gaming elements into a thrilling new adventure.
