WWE 2K25: A Solid Evolution, But Is It Enough?

2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvement strategy with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island" online world, revamped modes (Story, General Manager, Universe), a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, and more, were unfortunately unavailable for preview. My hands-on experience focused on the core gameplay (largely unchanged) and the updated Showcase Mode.

The Showcase Mode, centered on The Bloodline, offers a fresh take on WWE history. It features three match types: recreating historical events, creating hypothetical matches, and – most intriguingly – altering history's outcome. I experienced recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering Roman Reigns' Royal Rumble 2022 encounter with Seth Rollins. This provided a unique and engaging experience, improving upon previous iterations. However, the complete removal of control during the final pin of the Nia Jax match remains a minor issue. I would prefer more player agency during these pivotal moments.

While the over-reliance on real-life footage ("Slingshot") from previous Showcase Modes persists to a degree, significant progress has been made. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more satisfying experience, and the sequences are considerably shorter. The checklist system, a common point of contention, returns but with added optional timed objectives offering cosmetic rewards without penalties for failure – a positive step. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering a unique perspective for dedicated WWE fans.

Core gameplay remains largely consistent with WWE 2K24, retaining the enjoyable grappling system. However, notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, a mini-game adding strategic depth to the initial grapple, and the submission system, a color-matching mini-game (optional, like chain wrestling and other QTEs). Weapon throwing returns with expanded environments and an impressive selection of weapons, including Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle. The introduction of intergender matches, coupled with a massive roster (300+ wrestlers), significantly expands gameplay possibilities.

A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting with lumberjacks, promises further innovation. (Further details will be available in a future IGN First article.)

WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with incremental but smart improvements. While the larger additions remain unseen, the enhancements present suggest a worthwhile evolution for the series. Whether these refinements alone justify the annual release remains to be seen.
