Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but we made some great memories. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for autumn, and grateful for your company. Let's dive into today's gaming goodness: reviews galore, new releases, and some sweet sales!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Switch has given us second chances at some classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's adventures. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, especially in the second game, which enhances the first. Playing as Edgeworth offers a fresh perspective from the prosecution's viewpoint. While the mechanics are similar to other Ace Attorney titles, the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a distinct charm. The pacing can feel uneven at times, but fans of the main series will appreciate this spin-off. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to toggle between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A handy dialogue history feature is a welcome addition. Overall, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is a fantastic package, making every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) available on Switch. A must-have for series fans.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising treat! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack remains central to gameplay, solving puzzles and serving as both weapon and vehicle. Collectibles unlock customization options, adding replay value.

Expect a tough challenge; you'll die often, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help keep the mood light, but don't underestimate the difficulty. Mastering platforming and using your star creatively is key. Gimmick! 2 is a fantastic sequel, a testament to Bitwave's dedication. Highly recommended for platforming fans who relish a challenge.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion boldly shifts from action-platforming to a shoot 'em up experience. Surprisingly, it works well, though performance might be slightly hampered on the Switch's hardware. The intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals are still engaging. Weapon management is key: juggling your main gun, melee weapon, and a rotating third weapon keeps the gameplay dynamic and satisfying.

While different from the original Valfaris, Mecha Therion maintains its distinct style and avoids common shoot 'em up pitfalls. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version delivers a solid experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

A licensed game, naturally appealing to fans. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers plenty of fan service, with strong writing and meta-systems rewarding dedicated players. However, for non-fans, the limited number of repetitive mini-games might prove underwhelming. The presentation is solid, but the gameplay lacks depth and longevity for those unfamiliar with the franchise.

Even for fans, the focus on fan service might overshadow the overall experience. While the visuals, sound, and world are well-executed, the limited gameplay might not justify the price tag.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit Japanese titles. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized, a significant achievement. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations is challenging, Ripple Island is a decent adventure, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. While not top-tier NES games, they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's history and are worth exploring for retro enthusiasts.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
