MH Wilds Beta Test Extension Considered After Sudden PSN Outage

Monster Hunter Wilds is contemplating a 24-hour extension for their Open Beta Test 2 following a PlayStation Network outage that disrupted gameplay over the weekend. Dive deeper to learn more about the extension and the events that led to this decision.

Monster Hunter Wilds To Extend Beta Test 2

PS5 Players Could Not Play For 24 Hours

Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) is considering extending their Open Beta Test 2 by one day due to a PlayStation Network outage that occurred this weekend. The service was unavailable for 24 hours, starting at 6 PM EST on February 7th, affecting all online games on the console, including the MH Wilds beta. The network was restored around 8 PM EST, according to the official NA X (Twitter) support account.

As of now, the specific date or time for the extension has not been announced, but it is confirmed to be a 24-hour extension to compensate for the lost playtime. This could potentially extend from the end of Beta Test 2 Part 2 up to February 27th, the day before the game's official release. Part 1 of Beta Test 2 has already concluded, and Part 2 is scheduled to start on February 13th at 7 PM PT. Players will soon be able to resume their adventures and might even encounter the amusing low-poly bug that transforms the game's detailed characters into humorous, blocky versions.

The Cursed Low-Poly Bug Returns

Capcom has clarified that the builds used in the beta testing phases are outdated and do not represent the final game quality. As a result, players have encountered various bugs, including the notorious low-poly character glitch where textures fail to load correctly, turning characters, Palicos, and monsters into blocky, simplified versions.

Rather than frustration, fans have embraced this glitch, sharing their encounters on social media with humor and enthusiasm. Some even hope that MH Wilds will pay homage to these early, polygonal versions in future content. According to GamesRadar+, the MH Wilds team is aware of this bug and appreciates the community's enjoyment of it. However, they encourage players to experience the game in its full glory with proper specifications upon its official release later this month.

Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest addition to the acclaimed Monster Hunter series, introduces an open-world setting known as the Forbidden Lands. Players assume the role of a Hunter tasked with exploring this mysterious region and confronting its apex predator, the White Wraith. This highly anticipated action-RPG is set to launch on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 28th, 2025.

PlayStation Network’s Largest Outage In Recent Years

PlayStation attributed the outage to an "operational issue" via a post on its NA X (Twitter) support account and has apologized for the inconvenience. As compensation, active PlayStation Plus members will receive an additional five days added to their current subscription.

However, the community expressed dissatisfaction with Sony's communication during the outage, which caused widespread concern reminiscent of the 2011 PSN outage. That incident was due to a hacker attack, compromising approximately 77 million user accounts and leading to a three-and-a-half-week service interruption from April 20th to May 14th. During the 2011 event, Sony communicated extensively about the situation, the need for a detailed investigation, and the full scope of the attack.
