NetEase's Marvel Rivals mistakenly bans innocent players

NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued an apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players while attempting to eliminate cheaters. The error primarily affected players using compatibility layer programs on non-Windows systems, including macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck.

The incident, which occurred on January 3rd, saw a significant number of players unfairly banned. Community manager James confirmed on the official Discord server that the anti-cheat system incorrectly flagged players utilizing compatibility software as cheaters. NetEase has since reversed the bans and apologized for the inconvenience. They also encouraged players to report actual cheaters and provided instructions for appealing wrongful bans.

This isn't the first time Proton, the SteamOS compatibility layer, has triggered anti-cheat systems, highlighting a persistent issue with compatibility software.

Calls for universal character bans

Separately, Marvel Rivals players are calling for the implementation of character bans across all ranks. Currently, this feature is only available in Diamond rank and above. Many players, particularly those in lower ranks, feel that the absence of character bans creates an uneven playing field, limiting strategic diversity and making matches less enjoyable.

Reddit users have voiced their frustration, emphasizing that the lack of character bans in lower ranks hinders their ability to compete effectively. They argue that extending this feature to all ranks would not only improve balance but also provide valuable learning opportunities for newer players. NetEase has yet to publicly respond to this feedback.
