A significant server outage impacting all four North American data centers of Final Fantasy XIV occurred on January 5th, shortly after 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Initial reports and player accounts on social media suggest the outage stemmed from a local power failure in Sacramento, California, potentially caused by a blown transformer. Service was restored within approximately one hour.
This incident contrasts with the numerous distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that plagued the game throughout 2024. DDoS attacks, which flood servers with malicious traffic, resulted in high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix implemented mitigation strategies, these attacks remain a persistent challenge. Players have sometimes employed VPNs as a temporary solution to improve connectivity during these events.
The January 5th outage, however, appears to be unrelated to DDoS activity. Reddit discussions on r/ffxiv cite eyewitness accounts of a loud explosion in Sacramento, consistent with a blown transformer, coinciding with the server downtime. The unaffected status of European, Japanese, and Oceanic data centers further supports the theory of a localized power issue.
Currently, Square Enix is investigating the cause of the outage. A statement on the Lodestone confirmed the disruption and acknowledged the ongoing investigation. At the time of this writing, the Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers have returned to service, while the Dynamis data center is still undergoing restoration.
The recent outage adds another layer of complexity to Final Fantasy XIV's ambitious plans for 2025, including the anticipated launch of a mobile version. The long-term consequences of these recurring server issues remain to be seen.
