In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, there's no direct sprint button; your character will naturally transition into a sprint after running for a few moments. While sprinting is a good way to cover ground quickly, navigating the vast battlefields to reach other officers and turn the tide of battle can be challenging. This is where your trusty horse comes into play, offering a swift means of transportation that you can summon at any time in the overworld or during combat. Additionally, you can engage in combat from horseback, which is ideal for executing fast-paced, hit-and-run tactics. Let's delve into how you can unlock your first horse, enhance its abilities, and switch between different steeds.
Unlocking your first horse in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is straightforward and rewarding. During Chapter 1, after you've triumphed in the "Test Of Zheng Fei" battle, a merchant will appear in the overworld. You'll encounter this merchant as you make your way to the Battle Of Guangzong, specifically when heading northeast from Wan Castle but before you reach the camp. He'll be standing next to his horse, ready to gift it to you. Simply engage in a conversation with him, and the horse will be yours, automatically equipped for your use.
To summon your horse and mount it instantly, press down on the left joystick if you're playing on a console, or press the V key if you're using a keyboard.
Leveling up your horse in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is crucial for enhancing its capabilities. Your horse gains XP whenever you complete missions or main story battles with it equipped, even if you don't actively use it during the mission. Note that your horse will not earn XP from Skirmishes. Missions, marked by a red diamond with a soldier icon, are the key to earning XP for your horse. The amount of XP earned depends on the duration of the battle, as well as how frequently you ride and charge into enemies on your horse. As your horse levels up, it unlocks unique buffs at various intervals, with each horse offering different enhancements.
Although your first horse is automatically equipped, Dynasty Warriors: Origins offers the opportunity to acquire and switch between different horses. You can manage your horses in the Battle Preparation menu, located as the final option on the left side of the screen. Each horse comes with its own set of perks, and some are inherently faster or more advantageous than others, so it's wise to consider switching when you acquire a new one. To obtain new horses, you'll need to maximize the peace level of a region, at which point a reward, often a new horse, will be available at a nearby waypoint.
