In the midst of the chaotic, thousand-strong battles of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a strategic gameplay element shines: duels. Making a triumphant return from earlier installments, these intense one-on-one showdowns offer a unique tactical advantage. Let's explore how they work.
Introduced in Dynasty Warriors 4 and resurrected after over two decades, duels add a layer of thrilling strategy to Dynasty Warriors: Origins. While not immediately available, the ability to duel unlocks in Chapter 2. These aren't random encounters; you'll only be able to challenge high-ranking enemy officers. A brief window appears when an officer is present, prompting you to initiate a duel by simultaneously pressing R1 and L1.
Once accepted, a temporary arena forms, isolating you and your opponent in a decisive one-on-one battle. This isn't your typical free-for-all. A progress bar at the top of the screen tracks both your and your opponent's success. Each successful hit advances your meter, while your opponent's hits fill theirs.
The objective? Completely fill your meter by landing enough blows on your opponent. Your starting position isn't determined by health, but rather your current morale. A winning streak fills your meter more, while a losing one favors your opponent. An even match results in an even starting point. The duel demands careful observation of your opponent's attacks, utilizing dodges, parries, and strategic distance, especially when facing Battle Arts. Remember, time is limited, but reckless aggression is rarely rewarded.

Victory in a duel delivers a significant blow to your opponent, providing a substantial morale boost to your forces. Conversely, defeat inflicts heavy damage and a significant morale drop, potentially turning the tide of a late-game battle against you. However, an inconclusive duel results in no penalties for either side. The battle simply resumes. Exceptions exist in the form of inescapable duels; losing guarantees mission failure, while winning secures immediate victory. Therefore, while initiating a duel offers the potential for a game-changing advantage, underestimating your opponent can lead to disastrous consequences.
That's the art of dueling in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
