Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds, each influencing dialogue options and providing a unique starting weapon. However, all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of your chosen Background.

Arcane Scholar: This Background paints your character as an academic, providing relevant dialogue choices. A graduate of Bragganhyl Academy, your published treatise on soul lineages threatened a local lord, leading to your arrest. The Emperor, however, recognized your potential and recruited you to the imperial court archives. Expect dialogue reflecting knowledge of the occult, legal precedent, history, and poetry.

Court Augur: This Background offers a tragic backstory, leading to accusations of witchcraft. Visions of villagers turning on you after a crop failure, combined with your unusual insights, forced your flight to Highcrown. The Emperor then appointed you as his personal mystic. This Background emphasizes spiritual connection and provides dialogue options reflecting magical and divine themes. A strong choice for players wanting to roleplay as a wizard, and will likely find strong synergy with the companion Giatta.

Noble Scion: A classic case of failed nepotism, this Background places you as the offspring of influential, wealthy, but morally bankrupt nobles. Following your family's downfall, you sought the Emperor's mercy and now serve as a valuable ally. Ideal for players wishing to remain loyal to the Empire and carry out its will.

Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution by the Empire, this Background depicts a humble life before your service. Preferring the wilderness to city life and politics, your tracking and espionage skills make you a valuable asset. A perfect fit for players who enjoy a hunter-style play and will likely find a strong connection with the companion Marius.

War Hero: Your role in quelling a violent Skaenite uprising earned you a place among the Empire's elite warriors. Loyalty and grit define this Background, making it a great choice for players wanting to embody a warrior archetype. This Background may resonate most with players who connect with the companion Kai.
