Ghostrunner’s Dark New Chapter: Valor Mortis Unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live
In a chilling reveal during the Gamescom Opening Night Live pre-show, developer Cloud Chamber introduced their highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed Ghostrunner: Valor Mortis — a dark, visceral, and soul-crushing soulslike adventure steeped in historical myth, body horror, and supernatural vengeance.
Set in a twisted alternate-history Eastern Europe during a war-torn reimagining of Napoleon’s invasion, Valor Mortis plunges players into a world where the line between man and monster blurs beneath the weight of war and forbidden power.
You play as William, a French soldier who fell on the battlefield—only to return, not as a hero, but as a vessel of corruption. His body is no longer his own. Through the cursed Nephtoglobin, a plague-like substance that twists flesh and soul alike, William gains terrifying abilities. But with power comes transformation: the very force he wields slowly consumes him, warping his form and mind as he battles against Napoleon’s mechanized legions and his own deteriorating humanity.
The game leans heavily into body horror, showcasing enemies that mutate in real-time — soldiers erupting into writhing, grotesque abominations as the Nephtoglobin spreads through their veins. The battlefield becomes a living nightmare, where every victory carries the cost of decay.
As William descends deeper into the corruption, he unlocks devastating combat abilities: fire erupts from his palms, his limbs twist into bladed limbs, and he learns to summon spectral horrors born from the plague itself. Combat is fast, brutal, and punishing — true to the soulslike roots that made Ghostrunner a cult hit.

As the final trailer faded to black, a voice whispers over a crackling fire:
“They said I died for France. But I was never dead. I was waiting… to rise as the plague.”
The era of Napoleon is over.
The age of Valor Mortis has begun.
