Ghostrunner’s Dark New Chapter: Valor Mortis Unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live
In a chilling and cinematic reveal during the Gamescom Opening Night Live pre-show, the creators of Ghostrunner have launched their next bold vision: Valor Mortis — a dark, immersive soulslike adventure steeped in historical horror and supernatural decay.
Set in a twisted alternate-history Eastern Europe during a fictionalized version of Napoleon’s ill-fated invasion, Valor Mortis plunges players into a war-torn world where the line between soldier and specter blurs. You play as William, a French foot soldier who died on the battlefield—only to return with a horrifying gift: the ability to wield Nephtoglobin, a cursed, plague-like substance that corrupts both flesh and soul.
As William wields this malevolent force, he becomes both destroyer and harbinger of decay. The Nephtoglobin twists the living into grotesque, mutating horrors—former allies now ravenous abominations. Yet, it is through this corruption that William gains power: unleashing fire from his hands, summoning writhing tendrils of decay, and executing brutal, fluid combat moves that reflect the game’s relentless, high-speed combat style.
Visually, Valor Mortis draws from the grim aesthetic of 19th-century war and gothic horror, blending the brutal realism of Napoleonic warfare with surreal body horror and grotesque transformation sequences. The game’s art direction, sound design, and combat mechanics promise a visceral, haunting experience that builds on the intense, precision-based gameplay fans loved in Ghostrunner—but with a darker, more emotionally charged narrative.
