Ghostrunner’s Haunting New Chapter: Valor Mortis Unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live

In a chilling reveal during the Gamescom Opening Night Live pre-show, developer One More Studios introduced their most ambitious project yet: Valor Mortis—a dark, visceral, and soul-crushing first-person soulslike adventure steeped in historical horror and supernatural decay.

Set in a twisted alternate-history Eastern Europe during a fictionalized version of Napoleon’s 1812 invasion, Valor Mortis plunges players into a war-torn world where the line between man and monster has long since shattered. You play as William, a French soldier who died on the battlefield—only to rise again, forever changed.

What sets William apart is not just his return from death, but the corrupting force that now courses through him: Nephtoglobin, a malevolent, plague-like substance said to be the physical manifestation of war’s soul-wracking agony. Once a weapon of divine wrath, the Nephtoglobin now twists flesh and will alike, transforming William’s fallen comrades into grotesque, shambling horrors—and granting him terrifying power over their suffering.

As you progress, the game ramps up its body horror with brutal, grotesque enemy transformations, where soldiers dissolve into writhing masses of sinew and shadow, and entire battalions mutate mid-battle into nightmarish abominations. But it’s not just the enemy that changes—William’s own form begins to warp, and his abilities evolve in disturbing, immersive ways. From summoning fire from his own palms to unleashing chains of rot that tear through enemy lines, the powers feel both divine and cursed.

The gameplay promises a punishing yet rewarding experience reminiscent of Dark Souls and Ghostrunner, blending fast-paced melee combat with environmental puzzles, rhythm-based dodging, and brutal boss fights. The world is layered with lore, where every ruined village and abandoned church holds a secret about the origins of the Nephtoglobin—and the true cost of resurrection.
