Ubisoft Revives Maverick Development: Sources

The Far Cry universe's extraction shooter set in Alaska has undergone a complete overhaul according to Insider Gaming. Originally code-named Project Maverick, what began as a Far Cry 7 multiplayer expansion was completely reworked after internal evaluation. Development took a major turn despite positive internal testing feedback, with Ubisoft management redirecting resources toward Project Blackbird (Far Cry 7). The multiplayer component was ultimately scrapped after the technical team got reassigned to other projects.

Development has now transitioned to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, known for providing support services. Almost all original team members have been redistributed to work on the new Far Cry installment.

Insider Tom Henderson reports (as of December 2024) that Far Cry 7 will plunge players into a desperate race against time. The narrative follows a protagonist whose family gets abducted by a shadowy cult conducting terrifying hallucinogenic experiments on both animals and children. Players must rescue their loved ones within a strict 72-hour in-game window (translating to 24 real-world hours), making time management a critical gameplay component.

One particularly innovative feature involves the protagonist's wristwatch displaying a persistent countdown timer. This mechanic constantly reinforces the urgency of each situation while ratcheting up tension. Every passing second matters, with players facing difficult choices under pressure as they navigate this high-stakes rescue mission. Far Cry 7 appears poised to deliver a uniquely stressful experience where consequences escalate with every delay.
