A Retrospective Look at Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Games on the Nintendo Switch

This article takes a different approach to reviewing retro games on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop, rather than those offered through the Nintendo Switch Online app. The selection includes ten standout titles – four GBA and six DS – presented without any specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance Gems

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is Steel Empire, a solid shoot 'em up. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, the GBA iteration offers a worthwhile experience and an interesting comparison point. It's accessible even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

The Mega Man X series may have faltered on home consoles, but the GBA saw the rise of a true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, though it's not without its initial rough edges. These are refined in later installments, but starting with the first game is recommended.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The core concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries see diminishing returns, the first game provides ample enjoyment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it's a preferable choice even over the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on the right day. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS Classics

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult hit with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to her presence on subsequent consoles. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title (its origin console), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features unique gameplay as a ghost using abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of its own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a suitable alternative for those without access to a DS.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

From the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls compared to its original touch controls. All three DS Castlevania games within this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series is intrinsically linked to the DS/3DS, this adaptation is playable. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, offers a substantial RPG experience.
