Disney Announces Major Change Coming to Parks Next Month

Disneyland and Walt Disney World are overhauling their Genie+ ride reservation system, effective July 24th. The updated system, rebranded as "Lightning Lane Multi-Pass," will allow guests to book reservations ahead of their park visit, addressing a major point of contention with the current system.

The current Genie+, introduced in 2021 as a paid replacement for the complimentary FastPass system, has drawn criticism for its same-day booking requirement. This new iteration aims to alleviate this frustration.

Key Changes:

  • Advance Booking: Disney resort guests can book up to seven days prior to arrival; other guests can book up to three days ahead. This pre-planning option mirrors aspects of the former FastPass+ system.
  • Name Change: Genie+ is officially becoming "Lightning Lane Multi-Pass," with individual ride reservations termed "Lightning Lane Single Pass."
  • Increased Reservations: The number of Lightning Lane reservations guests can make per day will increase (exact numbers not specified).
  • Disneyland vs. Walt Disney World: While Disneyland will primarily see the name change, Walt Disney World will experience the full range of modifications, including advance booking.
  • Virtual Queue Remains: The existing Virtual Queue system, used for high-demand rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run, will remain unchanged.

Disney claims these changes respond to guest feedback, offering more flexibility and reducing in-park planning stress. The inclusion of Tiana's Bayou Adventure (opening June 28th at Disney World) within the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass system further highlights the scope of the update.

While the changes aim to improve the guest experience, the long-term impact and user reception remain to be seen. The summer months, with their increased park attendance and special events, will provide a crucial testing ground for this revamped reservation system.
