Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom has confirmed its ongoing commitment to revitalizing its classic intellectual properties (IPs), beginning with the highly anticipated returns of the Okami and Onimusha franchises. This strategy aims to deliver high-quality content to fans while leveraging Capcom's extensive game library.

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

In a December 13th press release, Capcom announced the development of new entries in both the Onimusha and Okami series. The next Onimusha title is set for a 2026 release, transporting players to Edo-era Kyoto. A new Okami sequel is also in the works, helmed by members of the original development team, though a release date remains undisclosed.

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom explicitly stated its focus on reactivating previously dormant IPs, aiming to create "highly efficient, high-quality titles" and boost overall corporate value. This initiative complements their current projects, including Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both slated for a 2025 launch. The company's recent releases, such as Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal, demonstrate their continued commitment to new IP development as well.

Fan Favorites Point to Future Releases?

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom's February 2024 "Super Election," a fan vote determining desired sequels and remakes, offers intriguing clues about potential future projects. The results highlighted strong demand for titles like Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, and Breath of Fire, alongside the already-announced Onimusha and Okami.

The extended dormancy of Dino Crisis (last installment: 1997) and Darkstalkers (last installment: 2003), along with the short lifespan of Breath of Fire 6 (2016-2017), suggests a high likelihood of these franchises receiving renewed attention in the form of remasters or sequels. While Capcom remains discreet about specific future plans, the "Super Election" results strongly indicate which dormant IPs are most likely candidates for revival.
