Pokémon TCG Pocket: Mastering the Poisoned Condition

This guide delves into the intricacies of the "Poisoned" status condition in Pokémon TCG Pocket, explaining its mechanics, key cards, counter strategies, and optimal deck building.

What is "Poisoned"?

Poisoned is a special condition inflicting 10 HP damage at the end of each round during the Checkup phase. Unlike some effects, it persists until cured or the Pokémon is knocked out. While it stacks with other conditions, multiple Poisoned effects don't increase the damage beyond 10 HP per turn. However, certain Pokémon benefit from this status, dealing amplified damage against poisoned opponents.

Poison-Causing Cards

Currently, five cards in the Genetic Apex expansion inflict the Poisoned status: Weezing, Grimer, Nidoking, Tentacruel, and Venomoth. Grimer stands out as a highly effective Basic Pokémon, poisoning foes with a single Energy. Weezing provides another strong option, using its "Gas Leak" ability (no Energy required) while Active.

Explore Pokémon TCG Pocket's Rental Decks, particularly Koga's Deck (featuring Grimer and Arbok), for a Poisoned deck foundation.

Curing Poison

Cards like Potion mitigate the effects of Poisoned by healing HP, but they don't remove the condition itself. They simply extend your Active Pokémon's lifespan.

Top Poison Decks

While not a top-tier archetype, a strong Poison deck can be built around the Grimer, Arbok, and Muk synergy. Grimer quickly poisons opponents, Arbok traps them, and Muk unleashes devastating damage (up to 120 HP) against poisoned Pokémon.

Sample META Poison Deck

Alternative strategies include using Jigglypuff (PA) and Wigglytuff ex, or a slower, high-damage Nidoking evolution line (Nidoran, Nidorino, Nidoking).
