Ubisoft Announces XDefiant Server Shutdown in June 2025

Ubisoft has confirmed the closure of its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, with servers scheduled to shut down on June 3, 2025. The "sunset" process begins December 3, 2024, halting new player registrations, downloads, and in-game purchases. Refunds for eligible purchases are underway.

Refund Information:

Full refunds will be issued for Ultimate Founders Packs. Players who purchased in-game currency (VC) and DLCs since November 3, 2024, will also receive complete refunds, processed within eight weeks. Refunds are expected by January 28, 2025. Contact Ubisoft for assistance if a refund isn't received by this date. Note that only the Ultimate Founders Pack is eligible for a refund; Founder's Pack and Founder's Pack Elite are not.

Reasons for Shutdown:

According to Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, Marie-Sophie Waubert, XDefiant failed to achieve the player base needed to thrive in the competitive free-to-play market. Despite initial success and a dedicated community, the game fell short of sustaining itself, rendering further investment unsustainable.

Impact on Ubisoft Studios and Personnel:

Approximately half of XDefiant's team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will downsize, resulting in significant job losses (143 in San Francisco and 134 anticipated in Osaka and Sydney). This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 across various American Ubisoft studios. Ubisoft has committed to supporting affected employees with severance packages and career assistance.

Positive Reflections and Season 3:

Despite the shutdown, XDefiant's Executive Producer, Mark Rubin, highlighted the positive aspects of the game's development, emphasizing the strong, respectful player-developer relationship. Season 3 will still launch as planned, though details remain scarce, with speculation pointing towards Assassin's Creed themed content. Access to Season 3 will be limited to players who acquired the game before December 3, 2024.
