Nintendo is reportedly set to announce the Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, January 16th. Interestingly, the original Switch was also unveiled on a Thursday in 2016.
A well-regarded leaker claims the official announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be on January 16th, 2025. This early 2025 reveal strongly suggests a first-half 2025 release.
The Switch 2's existence has been an open secret for some time. Reports indicate mass production began around late September or early October 2024, corroborated by numerous hardware leaks. Nintendo itself has committed to an announcement before March 31st, 2025. NateTheHate, a known leaker, confirmed the January 16th date on his podcast, citing unnamed sources. This aligns with Nintendo's history of using Thursdays for major announcements, mirroring the original Switch's October 20th, 2016 reveal. The Verge's Tom Warren independently corroborated this date.
Nintendo Switch 2: Leaks Abound
Whether Nintendo will follow the original Switch's pattern of a pre-announcement teaser remains to be seen. However, given the extensive leaks over the past months—so much so that Nintendo even commented on a replica console—the official reveal may hold few surprises for dedicated fans.
Rumored specifications include a slightly larger size than the Switch OLED (270 x 116 x 14mm) with an 8-inch LCD screen. The Joy-Cons are expected to magnetically attach, with the right Joy-Con possibly featuring a new "C" button below the home key, potentially related to a rumored mouse-like pointer function.
Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Lineup: A Mystery Remains
The Switch 2's launch game lineup is far less certain than the console itself. While My Time at Evershine and Bestiario are confirmed, neither is expected to be a day-one release if the console launches in the first half of 2025. Nintendo will likely leverage one or more first-party titles to drive early sales.
