1047 Games, the creators of the popular Splitgate, has announced a sequel to their 2019 hit multiplayer FPS. Get ready for the Sol Splitgate League!
CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game with lasting appeal, potentially for a decade or more. While the first game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the developers recognized the need for a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop to ensure long-term player engagement.
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, explained that the portal mechanics have been refined. The aim is to cater to skilled players while ensuring accessibility for all.
While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, Splitgate 2 will utilize Unreal Engine 5 and incorporate a new faction system. Expect a fresh, modernized take on the original's core elements.
The game is slated for a 2025 release on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Known for its unique blend of Halo-style combat and Portal's portal mechanics, Splitgate's original success stemmed from a well-received demo that garnered 600,000 downloads within a month. The game's popularity led to server upgrades to handle the influx of players.
After an extended early access period, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. Development on the original ceased to allow the team to focus on creating a truly revolutionary sequel.
The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three distinct factions, promising deeper gameplay.
According to the Steam page, each faction offers unique playstyles: Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force).
It's confirmed that Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.
While gameplay details are scarce until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer offers a glimpse of what to expect, showcasing new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a companion mobile app will allow players to delve into the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
