The Apple TV+ hit Hollywood satire "The Studio" has earned praise for its authenticity, yet one industry leader has challenged that view, dismissing the show as "horses—t" with only a "kernel" of truth.
“Every episode contains a kernel of brilliant, blinding truth—that’s what makes great satire,” Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman remarked in a recent Letterboxd interview. “The show is wonderfully satirical. Aside from that kernel, the rest is horses—t.”
He continued: “Maybe some days, but most days we’re not fools. I took it with the humor intended. When I took the stage at CinemaCon a few months ago, I walked out and said, ‘Hi everyone, I’m Seth Rogen!’ which got a good laugh.”
That said, Rothman does acknowledge some accuracy in the show's portrayal of executives, which is interesting given the series—starring Seth Rogen as a newly promoted studio executive—deliberately mocks some execs while revealing the humanity and dedication of others.
“What it captures correctly is the fundamental reality of studio executives trying to do the right thing amid countless obstacles,” Rothman noted.
“The difference is, it depicts a great deal of moral compromise in that pursuit. That’s not really how it is. Most people are like me: movie lovers with integrity, just trying to do our best.”
"The Studio" has been renewed for a second season, so fans can continue to enjoy a satirical peek behind the curtain, regardless of its factual accuracy. The complete first season is available to stream on Apple TV+, while a release date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
