Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: a live-action Power Rangers series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the showrunners behind the highly anticipated Percy Jackson and the Olympians, are in discussions to helm this new project. The duo is set to write, showrun, and produce the series in collaboration with 20th Century TV.

Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers franchise, aims to reinvent the beloved series for a new generation while keeping its existing fanbase engaged. This move reflects Hasbro's strategy to leverage the brand across various platforms and markets, as stated by their chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, following the acquisition of the franchise from Saban Properties in 2018 for $522 million.

The original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers TV series, which aired in the '90s, captured the hearts of children worldwide with its teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs that could combine into an even larger mech. Hasbro sees significant potential in expanding the Power Rangers brand across toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment, leveraging their global retail footprint.

The announcement of the Disney+ series follows the disappointing performance of the 2017 Power Rangers movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier take on the franchise. Despite plans for multiple sequels, the film's poor box office led to the cancellation of those plans, prompting Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro.

Hasbro is not stopping at Power Rangers. They are also developing other high-profile projects, including a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms at Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, also at Netflix, and a cinematic universe for Magic: The Gathering.
