Speculation surrounding a PlayStation 5 release of Starfield intensified after fans spotted a PlayStation logo on Bethesda's official Creations website. The logo appeared on a work-in-progress ship decal creation, which was subsequently removed. This fueled fan theories about an upcoming PS5 release of Bethesda's currently PC and Xbox-exclusive sci-fi RPG. A Reddit user, u/Dollar99Man, noted the logo's presence, suggesting it might be related to beta testing.
This discovery naturally leads to questions about potential future content updates or even a new expansion for Starfield timed with a PS5 launch. Recent months have seen a relative quiet surrounding Starfield, following the release of the less-than-well-received Shattered Space expansion. With Microsoft expected to host another summer showcase, that event could be the perfect opportunity for announcements regarding Starfield's future.
Bethesda has hinted at "exciting things" planned for Starfield this year, addressing player concerns about a lack of communication and updates. In June 2024, Bethesda reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Starfield, confirming at least one additional story expansion beyond Shattered Space. In an interview with MrMattyPlays on YouTube, Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard expressed the studio's goal of releasing an annual story expansion "hopefully for a very long time."
Starfield, launched in September 2023, marked Bethesda's first new IP in years and its first mainline single-player game since Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021. IGN's review awarded it a 7/10, stating: “Starfield has a lot of forces working against it, but eventually the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat make its gravitational pull difficult to resist.”
In January, Microsoft's Phil Spencer declined to rule out a PS5 release for Starfield. Reports from March 2024 indicated that both Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny were being considered for PS5 releases. Indiana Jones was subsequently confirmed for PS5, launching in Spring 2025, a few months after its PC and Xbox release. Starfield's PS5 release remains unconfirmed, though Spencer's comments suggest it's a possibility.
Several Xbox games are already available on PS5, including Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment. Microsoft also publishes Minecraft on PlayStation and is slated to release Doom: The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 on PS5 later this year. Forza Horizon 5 is also confirmed for PS5, and there are reports suggesting a potential Halo release on PlayStation after years of Xbox exclusivity.
Spencer has stated that Xbox's multiplatform strategy aims to increase revenue for Microsoft's gaming division, a goal underscored by the significant investment in Activision Blizzard. He emphasized the importance of maximizing game strength across console, PC, and cloud platforms.
Bethesda Game Studios, a 450-person studio, currently manages five teams focusing on Starfield, Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 76, mobile development, and external partnerships.
