Palworld, showcased at PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play event, finally arrives on PlayStation consoles after its Xbox and PC debuts. However, a significant exception exists: the PS5 launch is delayed indefinitely in Japan due to legal issues with Nintendo.
Despite the global release, Japanese PlayStation gamers are currently unable to access the game. This is attributed to ongoing legal action between Nintendo/Pokémon and Pocketpair, Palworld's developer. A patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and Pokémon has seemingly stalled the PS5 release in Japan.
Palworld's Japanese (X) Twitter account addressed the situation, confirming the global PS5 release in 68 regions but acknowledging the delay in Japan. The team apologized for the postponement and stated that a Japanese release date remains undetermined. They pledged to work towards a release for all PS5 users as soon as possible.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the cause of the delay, the ongoing legal battle over patent infringement is widely considered the primary reason. Nintendo's recent announcement of a Tokyo court case seeking injunctions and damages against Palworld further fuels this speculation. A granted injunction could potentially halt Palworld's operations entirely, leading to the game's removal.
