Bethesda has officially confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include support for official mods, yet this hasn't deterred the passionate fanbase from creating and sharing their own unofficial mods. Mere hours after the surprise release of the remastered version by Bethesda and Virtuos across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a selection of community-crafted mods surfaced on the popular modding platform, Nexus Mods.

These early mods primarily offer minor customization options, but their swift emergence underscores the unwavering dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community. At the time of writing, an impressive 22 mods are already available. Among the first mods to be released is one that allows PC users to customize their desktop by substituting the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut with one of two images featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Other mods enable players to bypass the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Additionally, there are mods that adjust gameplay mechanics, such as one that modifies the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that removes the in-game compass.

This surge of early mods comes despite Bethesda's announcement that Oblivion Remastered would not support official mods. This was clearly stated in the FAQ section on their website, prompting fans to seek alternative modding solutions. One such modder, Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming, released an Iron Longsword damage mod to demonstrate the game's potential for modding.

“This is just to prove modding is possible,” GodschildGaming stated in the mod's description. “Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept.”

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered launched today, marking 19 years since the original game's release. As more players dive into this updated version, the modding community is expected to grow, bringing even more innovative ways to personalize the gaming experience. In the meantime, you can explore discussions about why some consider this release more of a remake than a remaster and delve into Bethesda's decision to label it as "Remastered."
