The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately reveals a significant size increase compared to its predecessor. As the original Joy-Cons detach, the tablet section visibly expands, hinting at a move away from compact handhelds and towards larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad. While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can offer a reasonable estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak.

At CES 2025, we handled a Switch 2 mock-up by peripheral maker Genki. Although its accuracy was unconfirmed then, Nintendo's trailer shows a console remarkably similar to the mock-up. Therefore, the measurements we took at CES likely reflect the final Switch 2 dimensions.

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

We estimate the Switch 2 boasts an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels). This aligns with earlier 2024 rumors. We project the display to be approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% diagonal increase and a 66% larger area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch screen—a substantial upgrade.

Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen is 45% larger diagonally (and 111% larger in area) than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch display, and 14% larger diagonally (30% larger in area) than the Switch OLED's 7-inch screen. While larger isn't always better, a high-quality 8-inch display would significantly enhance the visual experience.

The Steam Deck, a key competitor, features a 7-inch (original) or 7.4-inch (OLED) screen. The Switch 2's estimated 8-inch display surpasses even the larger Steam Deck OLED, being 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in area.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen naturally results in a larger console. Measurements from the Genki mock-up, combined with analysis of the trailer, suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is roughly 25% larger than the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), 61% larger than the Switch Lite, and about 12% smaller than the Steam Deck.

While the depth is unconfirmed, it appears similar to the original Switch. So, while the footprint is significantly larger, the thickness remains comparable.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The trailer indicates that the Joy-Cons have increased in height while maintaining similar width. Our estimations suggest 32mm wide and 115mm tall for the new Joy-Cons—the same width as the originals (excluding the slot system) but 13mm taller, resulting in an approximately 13% size increase.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the Switch 2 screen unit at 200mm long and 115mm tall—approximately 31% larger than the original. This size comfortably accommodates the 8-inch screen, suggesting bezels of around 11mm on the sides and 8mm on the top and bottom.

It's crucial to remember that these are estimations. Official dimensions from Nintendo will provide definitive confirmation. However, based on the Genki mock-up, we are confident these figures are reasonably accurate, anticipating a console approximately 25% larger than the original Switch.
