Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Hints at Huge Storage Improvement

Leaked GameStop SKUs Suggest Nintendo Switch 2 Will Support microSD Express Cards

Recent leaks point to the Nintendo Switch 2's support for microSD Express cards, a significant upgrade from its predecessor's UHS-I interface. This suggests substantial improvements in storage technology for the upcoming console.

The Switch 2 is rumored to have entered mass production in late 2024, possibly as early as September, fueled by a surge of online hardware leaks since Q4 2024. Adding to this, early January 2025 leaks revealed GameStop SKUs for "Switch 2 Exp Micro SD Card" accessories in 256GB and 512GB capacities (originally shared by Reddit user Opposite-Chemistry96). This strongly indicates microSD Express compatibility.

Nintendo Switch 2: A 900% Boost in microSD Transfer Speeds

The current Switch uses UHS-I microSD cards, achieving practical transfer speeds around 95 MB/s. In contrast, microSD Express, leveraging the NVMe protocol, boasts speeds nearing 985 MB/s – a remarkable 900% increase.

UHS-I vs. microSD Express: A Comparison

Feature UHS-I microSD Express
Transfer Speed ~95 MB/s ~985 MB/s
Max Capacity 2TB 128TB

MicroSD Express cards also offer a massive capacity advantage, supporting up to 128TB compared to UHS-I's 2TB limit – a 6,300% difference. GameStop's leaked internal data suggests pricing of $49.99 for a 256GB card and $84.99 for a 512GB card.

Further Leaks and Nintendo's Timeline

The leak also included SKUs for a standard Switch 2 carrying case ($19.99) and two "deluxe" cases ($29.99). While these are likely unofficial accessories, their appearance aligns with the ongoing stream of Switch 2 leaks. Nintendo has previously stated it will unveil the new console before the end of its fiscal year (March 31, 2025), leaving only a few months for an official announcement.
