Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential "spiritual successor" to his iconic game. The possibility of a Minecraft 2 has been fueled by a recent poll on X (formerly Twitter).

On January 1st, Notch posted a poll asking fans which of two projects he should prioritize: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid, or a game inspired by Minecraft. The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed he was "100% serious" and essentially announced Minecraft 2, acknowledging the strong fan desire for a new game in a similar vein. He emphasized his passion for the project and his willingness to tackle the challenge.

However, Notch acknowledged the legal complexities. Since Microsoft acquired Mojang (Minecraft's developer) in 2014, he cannot directly use the Minecraft IP. He assured fans that any new project would avoid infringing on Mojang's and Microsoft's current work, expressing respect for their continued efforts.

Notch also expressed concerns about the inherent risks of creating a spiritual successor, noting that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these reservations, he's leaning towards the Minecraft-inspired game due to high fan demand and potential financial success.

While awaiting Notch's potential Minecraft sequel, fans can anticipate upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks in the UK and US (2026 and 2027), and the release of the live-action film "A Minecraft Movie" later in 2025.
