On January 19th, a temporary shutdown of TikTok in the US unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This resulted in a 24-hour outage, after which the game was restored, though in-app purchases remain unavailable.
The disruption stemmed from the political climate surrounding TikTok's operations in the US. Facing a short 90-day extension to finalize a deal selling 50% of its US business, the future of TikTok, and consequently Marvel Snap, remains uncertain. This uncertainty has prompted Second Dinner Studios to explore a change of publisher and the internalization of some services, as stated on X.
While the game is back online, many players are still experiencing authorization issues. PC players via Steam were unaffected. Second Dinner Studios has assured players on X that Marvel Snap is "here to stay" and that they are diligently working to fully restore service, keeping players updated on their progress. The lack of prior warning about the potential shutdown caused significant frustration, particularly for players who made in-game purchases before the outage. Second Dinner Studios promises further updates soon.
