Fortnite reverses course on Master Chief skin's Matte Black style after player backlash.
Epic Games has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin in Fortnite following significant community criticism. The initial announcement that the style would no longer be obtainable sparked widespread outrage among players.
December's Winterfest event in Fortnite has generally been well-received, but the return of certain skins, and the subsequent changes to them, has proven controversial. The Master Chief skin, initially released in 2020 and popular upon its return in 2024, saw its Matte Black style unexpectedly removed on December 23rd. This contradicted earlier statements that the style would remain permanently unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players who owned the skin. Epic Games quickly reversed this decision, confirming the Matte Black style's continued availability.
The Master Chief Skin's Controversial Return
The initial removal of the Matte Black style drew heavy criticism, with some players suggesting it could invite scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This follows the FTC's recent $72 million refund to Fortnite players due to Epic Games' use of "dark patterns." The dissatisfaction stemmed from the change affecting both new and existing Master Chief skin owners.
This isn't the only recent skin-related controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with some veteran players threatening to quit the game. Currently, some players are requesting an "OG" style for those who purchased the Master Chief skin at launch, a request Epic Games seems unlikely to fulfill, despite resolving the Matte Black style issue.
