Firaxis Games has announced a virtual reality version of the recently released Civilization VII. Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR marks the franchise's first foray into VR, launching Spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets.
Published by 2K Games, Civilization VII - VR is developed by PlaySide Studios, known for their work on VR titles such as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds.
Here's the official description:
In Civilization VII - VR, the world of Civilization comes alive like never before. The game map unfolds on a Command Table, allowing you to zoom out for a grand overview or lean in for detailed views of buildings and units—a truly immersive tabletop experience. Engage face-to-face with iconic world leaders, witnessing their reactions as you forge alliances or wage war across the ages.
Civilization VII - VR offers both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between the two. In VR, you're transported to an ornate museum overlooking a vista personalized to your chosen leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to your physical space. Explore detailed dioramas in The Archives, a museum room showcasing your gameplay achievements in both VR and mixed reality. Beyond single-player, compete for world domination in online multiplayer matches with up to three other Meta Quest 3 and 3S players.
The PC and console versions of Firaxis' 4X strategy sequel are currently available through early access, and player feedback on Steam has highlighted concerns regarding the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features. Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback and promised improvements, including UI enhancements, the addition of team-based multiplayer for cooperative play, and a greater variety of map types.
In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the negative reviews, expressing confidence that the "legacy Civ audience" will appreciate the game with more playtime and describing the early performance as "very encouraging."
