Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating: "We're tracking an issue where our Bungie name moderation tool has changed a large number of account names. We're actively investigating and will provide an update tomorrow, including details on additional name change tokens for all players."

Bungie's system typically alters names violating their terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this error impacted numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same name since 2015.

Bungie swiftly investigated, confirming the widespread nature of the problem through multiple tweets. They subsequently announced the identification and resolution of the underlying issue: "The problem causing the mass Bungie name changes has been identified and fixed on the server-side to prevent further occurrences," they tweeted.
