Sid Meier's renowned turn-based strategy game series, *Civilization*, embarks on a new chapter with the release of *Civilization VII*. Available on a wide array of modern gaming platforms, a key question arises: Does *Civilization VII* support cross-play and cross-progression between these different systems?

*Civilization VII* indeed offers cross-play across various platforms, but there are significant nuances to consider. To participate in cross-play, players must have an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. While this feature facilitates seamless gameplay across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, complications arise when including Nintendo Switch users in online matches.
The Nintendo Switch version of *Civilization VII* has limitations that affect cross-play. It cannot support map sizes listed as standard or above, and in cross-play multiplayer games, Switch players are restricted to four players in the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, and six players in the Modern Age. Therefore, while cross-play is generally smooth among most platforms, any game involving a Switch player will be subject to these constraints. This doesn't detract from the Switch's viability for *Civilization VII*, but players should be aware of these limitations when engaging in cross-play multiplayer.

In contrast to the intricacies of cross-play, *Civilization VII*'s cross-progression system is straightforward. Players need only link their 2K account across their gaming platforms to enable this feature. Once linked, the 2K account tracks progress across all platforms, ensuring that players do not have to restart their journey on each new system.
Recognizing the modern trend of gamers using multiple platforms, 2K and Firaxis Games have integrated cross-progression into *Civilization VII* from launch, unlike *Civilization VI*, which added this feature post-release. This ensures that whether you're playing on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress in *Civilization VII*'s expansive world-building gameplay is consistently maintained.
*Civilization VII* is set to release on February 11.
