Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy in a recurring role, though the series will focus on a new Slayer.
Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center around a new Slayer with the possibility of Gellar's reprisal.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) followed Buffy Summers, a high school student destined to fight supernatural forces. Aided by friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles, she battled demons and vampires across seven seasons. The story continued in a spin-off series, Angel, and later through comic books.
