The release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 has ignited a wildfire of modding activity. The sheer volume of community creations is staggering.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed on Twitter (X) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of the patch's September 5th launch. "Modding is pretty big," he stated. This figure was quickly surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting. "Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating," Reismanis tweeted.

This surge is fueled by Patch 7's introduction of Larian's own Mod Manager, a built-in tool simplifying mod browsing, installation, and management. Previously, modding tools were available as a separate Steam app, enabling modders to craft custom stories using Larian's Osiris scripting language.

Enhanced Modding Capabilities

A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) has further expanded modding possibilities, including a level editor and reactivated features previously unavailable in Larian's editor. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, the community's ingenuity has pushed boundaries.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

Larian Studios is actively developing cross-platform modding support, aiming for initial PC compatibility, followed by console support. Vincke acknowledged the complexity of this undertaking, citing the need for console submission processes and thorough testing.

Beyond Modding: Patch 7's Enhancements

Patch 7 delivers a wealth of improvements beyond modding, including enhanced UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance optimizations. Future updates from Larian are anticipated, promising further developments in cross-platform modding and other exciting features.
