Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a legendary clash in Dynasty Warriors history, presents a significant challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. This guide provides a step-by-step strategy to overcome this difficult stage, the final chapter of Chapter 2. The objective: defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by clearing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue eliminating bases; defeating Zhang Liao rewards you with the twin pike weapon. Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate.

Facing Dong Zhuo's Forces:

The initial assault on the gate is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic, weakening the defenses and allowing further advancement.

Lu Bu's Intervention:

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. Lu Bu is overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, focus on eliminating surrounding officers to maintain morale, which Lu Bu significantly depletes. Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base (Yuan Shao). Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will temporarily hold him off. This creates a time constraint; defeat Dong Zhuo before Lu Bu overwhelms Liu Bei and Yuan Shao.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

After Lu Bu's departure, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Capture the northern and western bases. With three squads ready, charge towards Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo will employ two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to break through enemy lines and eliminate soldiers/officers guarding the catapults. Your forces will then destroy them, ending the tactic.

The second Grand Tactic requires defeating an officer. Proceed to the right-side stairs, encountering Diaochan (a formidable opponent). A duel with Diaochan is recommended to avoid being overwhelmed. After defeating the officer, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should now easily overcome Dong Zhuo's remaining strength. A potential Grand Tactic from Dian Wei further simplifies the final confrontation. While a duel is tempting, a standard defeat of Dong Zhuo is sufficient at this point.
